🌿 This Day 🌿

A Competitive Calendar Story Card Game

This Day is a storytelling card game built around real calendar dates.

Each card represents a real day of the year —
January 1 through December 31.

Children collect their own date cards and bring them to the game —
like a personal calendar collection.

No two players need to have the same cards.

This is a playable calendar universe.

What Is on Each Card

Each card has two sides.

Front

  • The full date (day + month)
  • The monthly energy
  • A child-created illustration

Back

  • Name of illustrator

  • A note about an official or unofficial holiday

  • A QR code linking to:

    • A short explanation

    • A simple activity

    • Historical, scientific, or nature-based context

Dates are real.
Facts are real.
Stories are created by players.

Game Structure

This is now a competitive storytelling game.

Each player plays for themselves.

The goal is to:

  • Build powerful story sequences

  • Unlock jetons

  • Control rare phenomena

  • Shape the calendar field

Setup

  • Each player brings their own collection deck.

  • Shuffle and draw a starting hand (agreed number, e.g., 5 cards).

  • Place one starting card in the center of the table.

  • This becomes the origin of the field.

The Calendar Field (2D Mode)

The game is played in two dimensions.

Cards may be placed:

  • Above

  • Below

  • Left

  • Right

They must always touch at least one existing card.

You may:

  • Extend lines

  • Open new branches

  • Create intersections

  • Build parallel lines

You may NOT:

  • Place diagonally

  • Snake around corners

  • Break continuity

All sequences must form in a straight horizontal or vertical line.

On Your Turn

  1. Play one card from your hand.

  2. The card must follow chronological order by date number (Day-of-Year index).

    • Higher number = later in the year.

    • Lower number = earlier in the year.

  1. The sequence must remain continuous in a straight line.

  2. Tell the story moment connected to that date.

  3. Add your token to mark ownership of that card.

If you cannot play:
You may discard and draw one new card.

Jetons

Rare Phenomena of the Calendar Field

Jetons are earned individually.

They are not shared.

There are 12 primary jetons + 1 hidden Black Hole.

How Jetons Are Earned

When three consecutive calendar dates (by Day-of-Year order) appear next to each other in a straight horizontal or vertical line,

the player who placed the third card:

  • Unlocks the jeton corresponding to that third date

  • Gains +1 extra turn

Example:

If 32 → 33 are on the field
and you place 34 in line →
you unlock the 34th jeton and gain +1 turn.

Jetons may be unlocked multiple times during the game.

However:

Jetons are only triggered at the moment a card is placed.
Rearranging cards does not create new jetons.

If You Do Not Own the Matching Card

Because each player has their own collection,
you may not own the exact date needed to complete a sequence.

In that case, you may:

Option A – Wild Catalyst

Spend one jeton to temporarily declare a “Phantom Date.”
It counts for one turn only and must be replaced later by a real card.

Option B – Story Claim

Declare a narrative bridge and skip the missing date.
If no one challenges it, the sequence counts.

(Advanced groups may vote.)

Card Movement

Cards may be rearranged only by specific jeton effects.

Normal turns do not allow moving existing cards.

Opening new lines and branches is allowed naturally through placement.

The 12 Primary Jetons

Each represents a rare shift in the Calendar Field.

  1. The First Flame
Start a new straight line from any existing card.

  2. The Philosopher’s Seed
Transform a minor story into a dramatic turning point.

  3. Mercury Shift
Swap any two cards on the field.

  4. The Golden Ratio Gate
Reorder three consecutive cards into correct chronological order.
(No additional jeton is triggered by this.)

  5. The Time Crucible
Fuse two adjacent cards into one combined event.

  6. Eclipse Veil
Temporarily flip one card face down.
It returns with a new meaning on the next round.

  7. Astral Compass
Place one card ignoring chronological order rules.

  8. Aurora Covenant
Merge two parallel lines into one.

  9. Memory Portal
Place a card of the same date and reinterpret the story from another perspective.

  10. Chrono Ouroboros
Replay a previous moment and evolve it.

  11. Starforge
Create one temporary rule that lasts one full round.

  12. The Cosmic Stone
When unlocked, you gain structural control once.

The 13th Jeton — Black Hole

The Black Hole does not belong to a month.

It appears only when:

A full uninterrupted sequence of 12 consecutive months
forms in a straight horizontal or vertical line.

Not diagonally.
Not in a snake pattern.
Not across branches.

Black Hole Control

The player who places the 12th card in that straight line:

  • Unlocks the 12th jeton

  • Decides whether to activate the Black Hole

  • Chooses which Black Hole power to use

This player receives temporary “Hand of God” authority.

Black Hole Powers (Choose One)

  1. Absorption
Remove one straight line from the field temporarily.

  2. Gravity Field
All next three cards must connect to one chosen card.

  3. Singularity Reset
Condense up to three cards into one event.

  4. Constellation Shift
Reorganize the field into new straight lines.

Victory

There is no fixed end condition.

Players may agree to stop when:

  • The field becomes stable

  • All jetons have appeared

  • A Black Hole has reshaped the year

The winner may be:

  • The player with most jetons

  • The player with longest continuous line

  • Or decided by group vote for strongest story

Core Philosophy

Time is structured.

Stories are not.

This game turns the calendar into a field of construction.
